SOS Interactive Workshops in the UAE: March 16 & 18, 2009

EcoSmart will be holding an interactive workshop and consultation in the United Arab Emirates. The “Toward Better and Greener Concrete” workshop will take place in Abu Dhabi on March 16, 2009 and in Dubai on March 18, 2009.
These events follow on EcoSmart’s consultation seminars across Canada in February 2009, which sought industry feedback on issues relating to the SOS concrete software that is currently in development.
The UAE interactive workshops are open to professionals whose work relates to concrete in some way: architects, engineers, developers, contractors as well as concrete and cement suppliers.
Participants will learn about the SOS project and provide feedback on how it can be made relevant to their work.
Workshops are free and include a light breakfast and lunch. RSVP is required.

The SOS Project: Supplementary Cementing Materials (SCM) Optimization System
|
To address concerns and possible confusion over using supplementary cementing materials (SCMs) in concrete, an EcoSmart led partnership is developing a ‘SCM Optimization System’ (SOS). This web-based decision-making system will allow developers, architects, engineers, contractors and material suppliers to optimize the use of SCMs in concrete by simulating the effects of varying the multitude of parameters that interplay on construction projects. SOS will be used at all stages of construction – through concept, structural design, materials selection and proportioning, to construction management and implementation.
By determining optimal SCM levels and tradeoffs, the system will enable users to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and construction costs, and lower the environmental footprint by directly reducing the amount of Portland cement required for construction projects.

SOS System User Consultation: Canadian Workshop Series Feb 3-9, 2009 |
The SOS project is underway and the software is at the system design stage. A key part of the software development is consulting with various professional groups and individuals to get input into what the tool should do.

Throughout December 2008 and February 2009 consultation workshops were held across Canada with potential users of SOS, including architects, engineers, developers, contractors and concrete & cement suppliers. These interactive events were held to ensure the SOS tool will respond to the needs of the construction & design industry.
Half day industry consultation workshops were held in Vancouver, Halifax, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Winnipeg, Calgary and Edmonton. Participants learned about the SOS project and provided feedback on how they thought it could be relevant to their work. This information is being incorporated into the development of the software to ensure SOS is a tool that will be beneficial to its users once it is released in early 2011.
Further consultation workshops will also take place in the UAE (March 16 & 18, 2009) and in Saskatchewan in late April, 2009.
